"artistic license" is what gives artists, writers, poets, sculptors, performers, etc., leave of common sense laws and societal expectations to express anything their creative vision can imagine from a new dance to photon torpedos.  This freedom of creativity has time and again become the inspiration to engineers, scientists, and people in many other walks of life around the world.  And, this is available to all creative people.  In my case, I literally just did not know any better, and that is where much of my work comes from...this just not knowing I could not do this.  There is also the element of intuition which is not knowing in the usual sense, but rather another type of experience when one intuits something without really knowing how it is done. Sometimes things just come to you, like a dream of riding along side a beam of light or "seeing" something in a very clear way without logic or explanation in the moment.  So, much of my work comes to me in this sort of way, not a logical and thought out manner, at least at first.  So it is art, not science, with all the freedom and creative artistic license that goes with it.

Artful use of terms or going in circles?...
Many times in the essays and journal entries included in this site I reference the terms or sayings, "I don't know", unknown, mystery, and not knowing, etc., etc., etc.  This does not necessarily refer to a state of stupidity or total lack of knowledge but rather a high state of experience, intelligence, or enlightenment.  For example, someone can have a profound intuitive experience and become aware of something without knowing how they know it or where the information came from.  Another example might be a couple who has a profound and marvelous sexual experience with multiple sustained orgasms without really knowing how they did it exactly.  More than a question of "how did you do that?" it's a matter of "why not?", just not knowing the limits of the physical experience and letting go.
Many times people "know" something in a way that becomes a limit or barrier to experience.  "Not knowing" can actually be a very high state of being and a place to come from where new and marvelous things can take place and new ideas come.
In the case of the field of Cosmology, keeping the element of "we don't know" can allow for future generations to have other lines of questioning to work on and alternate explanations to research.  So long as so many people "know" that The Big Bang Theory is close to perfect, etc., other views of the Universe are left on the sidelines and decades from now the field will be so far behind.
Keeping an open door and welcoming new ideas is essential.

Krăllium
An example of something created out of not knowing any better, as a non-scientist and artist dabbling in cosmology all these years, is my invention of the following "new element".  Of course, this is art and not science.  Artists have a license to make art and be creative outside the bounds of what is necessarily reasonable or even possible within the realms of the laws of physics.   From a dream, here comes "Krallium": the object of the search for the grand unified field theory, basic element of the universe, the opposite of a photon, source of gravity and dark energy, etc....

Krăllium, A or Kr (the “a” pronounced as in the word awl) also called simply “Dark”; numbers .5 and 120 on the periodic table of elements;  not a particle or wave; related to light in a sort of anti-photon manner (does not “shine out” like light but “in” like a black hole) created in a rare transformation of very old regular matter occurring at random throughout the cosmos;  responsible for the semi-regular pattern formation of all bodies (found in their cores), planets, stars, and galaxies in the relatively homogenous patterns observed, as opposed to the haphazard patterns that would occur by the casual formation of matter as in current popular theory which would leave mega masses the size of hundreds of thousands of galaxies in some areas and empty space just as massive in others;   it is not possible to recreate in a laboratory as one particle would begin to build a new planet devastating Earth like a doomsday bomb;   part of the basis for The Krallosvierd Theory of The Universe. copyright protected by Matthew Jesse Montez Watts 1964 - 1998, also referred to as "K-Matter" in earlier writing related to "The K-Sphere Theory" (Krallosvierd).

Of course, I do not expect this to be taken seriously and actually appear on The Periodic Table of elements, but as an artist my work just might inspire someone actually doing real science who may be experiencing a block along a line of research or exploration, etc., and who just might say "Hmm, this could help solve everything.  What if the cores of bodies did come first?", and then take a look to see what is actually possible out there.  And, the idea of an element being both the lightest and smallest and largest and heaviest might bring some new and creative line of questioning.   Also, maybe the idea of an opposite of "light" might be interesting especially as there does seem to be a balance in nature...hot/cold, dark/light, etc.   Or, it's just art and people may enjoy reading this and having fun with it just as art, and there certainly is nothing wrong with that, is there?

PLAN 9____________________
WHERE BAD ART MEETS REAL SCIENCE??
(An Artistic Dramatization, not a Y2K Scare of 911 Emergency)
About 20 years ago I saw an old cult classic movie that was billed as the worst movie ever made, "PLAN NINE FROM OUTER SPACE". The strange thing though was that I thought there was an element of it that was actually quite profound and prophetic...and of course I was the only one who did.  In the movie, guys from outer space (Mars maybe?) come to Earth to stop scientists from conducting an experiment of testing a bomb that would create a chain reaction in light (a photon bomb?) and blow up the Solar System, or something like that.  As wild as this sounds, take a look at what is going on in real science today by key wording in "new element periodic table" and see just what thing science is attempting to create or make.  It's not important what I say or think about this, but what is amazing about what this new thing is and what it might do, etc., is that THEY DO NOT KNOW.  They just keep smashing atoms together and one in one billion billion "sticks together" for one thousanth of a second created a new heavy element, Element 118.  Why?  What is this for?  What else might occur?  Do they really know?  That just scares me a little bit.  Creating a thing that is not natural in the local universe and that they think might not have existed in this form for 15 Billion years, etc., and might only occur in one in 90gazillion googleium quadzillion particles every tetracentillion centuries, or something like that, in a lab right here on Earth is a good idea why?  Anyway, which is wilder, weird bad art of real live serious science?  I am of course exaggerating here, and this idea is not a new one.  In the film "DaVinci Code" there was a bit of anti-matter taken out of CERN, where the world's largest particle accelerator is, and this was a dramatic and creative bit of sci-fi art, with a twist of possible future reality (?)...how close to reality is top secret.   So, even if there is the slightest bit of doubt about something being very very bad, should not the people involved ask the important question...."Hey, why are we doing this again?"  Could this be "bad"?
Take a look for yourself at what is going on in science and what they expect may or may not happen, etc., and see if you are not amazed as well.  It's something very interesting to take a look at if you are at all curious.  And, after all, tax dollars are funding most of this so why should we not see some of what we are paying for and know a little about why it is being done....
...to recreate the energy of The Big Bang?  Now that is a really bad idea in my book.  One line I remember from that "Plan 9" movie was spoken by one of the hysterical angry Spacemen about Earthlings..."THEY ARE STUPID STUPID STUPID!!!".  That's some of the bad screen writing that makes it the worst movie ever made, but I think there is an element of profound truth in this that should not be ignored just because it was from a dopey sci-fi movie with Zombies and Spacemen.  In some ways the more progress we make the more stupid things we are doing as a species in general.  Some things are obvious and common knowledge, like the clearing of old growth Redwood forests, but some things are hidden away for top security clearance eyes only.
What is the responsibility of the artist in these matters?
Star Trek's "communicator" influenced the invention of the flip top cell phone, and when the Shuttle Craft sets were not going to show up on time Roddenberry invented "The Transporter", which has been taken seriously by the military and scientists, just as one example of art's influence.  Art influences life and science, so perhaps it falls to the artist to make the statements or voice the concerns, while there is still time.

Part of the aim of this website is to point to the difference between those things that are harmless to the environment and other people, and those things that directly affect others and contribute to the destruction of nature.  Part of what makes the real difference here is what one believes.   If a person, or corporation, believes that there is no harm in clear cutting an entire Rain Forest, for example, in order to raise a few head of cattle, how does the belief relate to the actual end result and reality of it?  If a group of scientists decides that it is very important to build a massive particle accelerator to smash atoms together to create new matter or "the energy of The Big Bang event" (which is a myth, see Big Bang Business page), what harm is that?  If there is a chance that it could be very bad (to make an understatement), does their belief that it will be OK make any difference?   Does belief alter reality?   Is it fair to risk others when the only protection is a belief?
In the long run, the Earth will either support life as it does today or it will not, and there will either be water to drink and air to breathe, or there will not.  What makes the difference here is what is happening right now today, whether we believe it or not.  Thinking things are fine will not help.  Believing the problems will just go away does not work.
In conclusion here, the job or contribution of the creative artist can be more than just that of entertainer or provider of pretty paintings and lovely dance and performance.   Creative expression can be a vital part of the human experience and art can serve to keep the door open for new possibilities and alternative views of life and the universe.   If it is a human tendency to carve things down into simple truths and specific mythologies, perhaps it is one job of the artist to hold up a mirror to remind us of who we are and to save us from this most dreaded enemy...ourselves.
